Nishiki Market and the Cat Cafe

We were going to head to Fushimi Inari Taisha and the Gekkeikan Sake Museum after Nara, but then there was a torrential downpour. Since we’re in the path of a strong typhoon, we decided to not trust the weather, and we headed back to Kyoto for some covered arcade/indoor activities.

First, we took the subway from Kyoto Station to Shiyakusho-mae and walked around the underground shopping center a bit. These dolls show traditional Japanese wedding outfits.

Next, we took them to Nishiki Market, a food market. These are tsukemono – Japanese pickles produced by fermenting in rice bran.

Cute cats!! Too bad you can’t bring one home. Do they meow in English or Japanese?
